Industry is closely related to people’s consumption life. To foster a better industrial environment, high-tech automation is rapidly transforming manufacturing processes, including robotic welding guns.
In the 1970s: In 1973, ASEA (now ABB) introduced the world’s first fully electric, computer-controlled industrial robot, the IRB-6. Now, more than 50 years later, why are robotic welding guns becoming increasingly mainstream in automotive manufacturing? Will they eventually replace manual labor entirely? What role do they play in welding?
Follow Heron Intelligent Equipment to explore the key technical aspects of resistance welding.

The Critical Requirements for Welding Accuracy and Quality:
(1) Root cause: Automotive body welding demands exceptionally high precision and consistency, which directly impacts vehicle safety and longevity. Traditional manual or pneumatic welding tools rely on operator skill, and parameters (current, pressure, time) are susceptible to human variability, leading to inconsistent weld strength and increased spatter.
(2) Principle of welding gun: The standard resistance spot welding technique utilizes electrode pressure combined with a high current for a brief duration to heat and melt the metal contact surface, forming a weld nugget. The welding process consists of the following steps: pre-pressing (clamping the workpiece), applying the welding current, maintaining pressure during cooling, and releasing the electrode.
(3) The principle of the robotic welding gun: Pressure is precisely controlled by the servo motor, and a more stable current output is achieved using a medium-frequency inverter welding power supply (such as high-frequency current above 1kHz). This reduces the heat-affected zone and ensures consistent molten core size and strength for each weld. For example, the servo welding gun can adjust pressure within 0.01 seconds to prevent welding defects caused by workpiece gap variations.
Compared with other traditional welding companies, Heron Intelligent Equipment is not only a developer of welding guns and inverter power supplies but also a robot system integrator, with deeper expertise and experience in the practical application of welding guns.
